Jumbo Frames on VMware ESX

From the Service Console:
  1. Change the MTU on the vSwitch "esxcfg-vswitch -m 9000 "
  2. Do an "esxcfg-vswitch -l" and a "esxcfg-nics -l" to make sure the vSwitch and the physical NICs associated with it are now set to an MTU of 9000.
  3. Create the port group and add it to the vSwitch "esxcfg-vswitch -a "
  4. Create a VMkernel interface and associated port group "esxcfg-vmknic -a -i -n -m 9000 "
  5. Test it "vmkping -s 9000"

VMware machine on Linux over NTFS

When you get any VMware host software on Linux (Server or Workstation) running any guest on NTFS filesystem, you get ntfs-3g to 100% CPU usage on a regular basis.

This can be overiden by setting
  • mainMem.useNamedFile=FALSE
in the .vmx definition file.

This gets 'mount.ntfs-3g' CPU usage back to manageable levels... 3~10%.
